Let Nature in and worries out!

John Muir (1838 – 1914) John of the Mountains: The Unpublished Journals of John Muir, 1938 – is a famous naturalist and author. During his life he became a well know advocate for the preservation of wilderness. His views on nature and his written words can serve as a remind to us of how freeing and uplifting being with nature can be. Today I share some of his words with you.

Written one hundred years ago,

“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into the trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves – John Muir

“I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found was really going in. – John Muir

    • Yes the sun does give the best hugs, yours for the taking too! Yes, Muir is among a handful of early naturalists (that we know of, I’m sure there were many more back then) that I am fascinated with and enjoy his written words and philosophy, which he backed up with action!

    • Hi Bulldog, thank you. It does do the “sole” good. Hiking and nature walks are two of my favorite outdoor activities. I’m guessing you walk and climb a fair amount, my friend! xx

  1. I can see where Muir was coming from. I have often gone out and wanted to stay out all day observing and loving nature. Had I been able to, I would. I would love to go out camping just to be one with nature and take it all in.

Mind you, those views dwarf anything near me.

    • Good morning Alastair, yes those photos dwarf anything around here too (except for the magnificent river). In the nearby state of Oregon, however never ending beautiful vistas, Mountains, valleys, meadows, the ocean. Can’t be beat! And Muir had a beautiful soul that he tied into nature itself! 🙂 xo

        • Yes he was born in Scotland and moved with family to this country when we has 10 or 11 yrs old. Quite the young inventor too! Science and inventing inventing things his primary interest until sometime during college when he began to shift to the science of nature. An amazing man. A genius at who he was and what he accomplished in his life!

            • Did you know as a kid, he had a ton of farm chores to do and because he wanted to have his own free time he invented a machine that pushed him out of bed very early each morning so that he have his “alone” time. He displayed his machine at local fairs also! Fascinating, huh!

  2. Wonderful images and words. Great for the weekend. I am still recovering from this bug and try to rest as much as possible, so it is wonderful to read your post. Thank you Penny! With love Ute
