John Muir (1838 – 1914) John of the Mountains: The Unpublished Journals of John Muir, 1938 – is a famous naturalist and author. During his life he became a well know advocate for the preservation of wilderness. His views on nature and his written words can serve as a remind to us of how freeing and uplifting being with nature can be. Today I share some of his words with you.
Written one hundred years ago,
“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into the trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves – John Muir
“I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found was really going in. – John Muir
“Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.” John Muir

Kenley
Thanks, Yes he’s a great one isn’t he! 🙂
John Muir is my hero, thanks 🙂
My pleasure. He is also a hero of mine (since very early on!) Thank you, Mike. 🙂
John Muir is one of my favorite reads, leaving me in serenity. Thanks for spreading his words, Penny. The sun gives the best hugs!
Yes the sun does give the best hugs, yours for the taking too! Yes, Muir is among a handful of early naturalists (that we know of, I’m sure there were many more back then) that I am fascinated with and enjoy his written words and philosophy, which he backed up with action!
John Muir, my hero. 🙂
Mine too, Emmy. Thank you for being there for a mutual friend of ours! 🙂
Lovely reminder to get out there come rain or shine.. I can attest to the fact it does the sole the world of good…
Hi Bulldog, thank you. It does do the “sole” good. Hiking and nature walks are two of my favorite outdoor activities. I’m guessing you walk and climb a fair amount, my friend! xx
Got myself a great dose of nature today!
Hope you did too.
xx 🙂 🙂 xx
Yes, I did RoSy, glad you did also and I hope you are enjoying your Sunday as well! 🙂 xo
Beautiful post, I love his writings. 🙂
Thank you. He is/was a very inspirational person (on many levels) indeed! 🙂
AnElephantCant hide his embarrassment
He does not know of John Muir
But he is nobody’s fool
He sees this dude is cool
He is at one with nature for sure
No worries, so much I don’t know about Scotland either. Yes Muir was totally “one” with nature, I envy him that! 🙂 xo
John Muir has always spoken to my soul. I love each and every one of his quotes. 🙂
Too! 🙂
I can see where Muir was coming from. I have often gone out and wanted to stay out all day observing and loving nature. Had I been able to, I would. I would love to go out camping just to be one with nature and take it all in.
Mind you, those views dwarf anything near me.
Good morning Alastair, yes those photos dwarf anything around here too (except for the magnificent river). In the nearby state of Oregon, however never ending beautiful vistas, Mountains, valleys, meadows, the ocean. Can’t be beat! And Muir had a beautiful soul that he tied into nature itself! 🙂 xo
I did a search for John Muir, and John Muir Way is in Scotland. http://www.johnmuirway.co.uk/ I hadn’t actually heard of him.
Yes he was born in Scotland and moved with family to this country when we has 10 or 11 yrs old. Quite the young inventor too! Science and inventing inventing things his primary interest until sometime during college when he began to shift to the science of nature. An amazing man. A genius at who he was and what he accomplished in his life!
I think people like that are amazing. People who start down one path and then think “hey wait a minute ,… the outdoors looks good”
Did you know as a kid, he had a ton of farm chores to do and because he wanted to have his own free time he invented a machine that pushed him out of bed very early each morning so that he have his “alone” time. He displayed his machine at local fairs also! Fascinating, huh!
That is incredible. I think I need to make one of those for my kids 😉
Wonderful images and words. Great for the weekend. I am still recovering from this bug and try to rest as much as possible, so it is wonderful to read your post. Thank you Penny! With love Ute
Thank you Ute, as I mentioned earlier take care of that cold be better soonest, much love to you, xo
