Aren’t dogs wonderful? They can be your buddies and your protectors. There was one in my life that was more than a little special! He went where I went, and was just about the best friend to have around when I needed cheering up or a snuggle.
He’d also, on his own, go over and gently bite the hand of any man I was dating that would put his arm around me. (he was jealous) I thought it was sweet. The gentlemen in question, not so much. Since Rook (pronounced like the ‘oo’ in root) was a German Shepherd, weighing in at 95 lbs and a trained “protection” animal, most people took him seriously.
I bought him and trained with him from a special security place when he was a year and a half old, to keep myself and my little ones safe. After a few years, we were the best pals ever and he was a part of our family. And he proved his worth on several occasions!
If you have a dog, take him or her for a walk today. Give them a special treat from me and a great big hug because it is true … sometimes …
“A Dog is a Person’s Best Friend!”

Have a great Tuesday,
~ Penny
I love my dog, Copper, and I did walk him today. If I don’t walk him (which happens only if I’m sick), he’ll stare at me and he wins because of his intense amber eyes! Lovely post, Penny! Hugs!
Amber eyes on a dog are gorgeous aren’t they Lauren. Copper sounds delightful and a sweetheart also! hugs to you, xo

Some may be quite dumb
But when you need a chum
There’s nothing better than a lovable mutt
Anelephantcan’t speak truer words than these. So very true! xx
All my past dogs were rescued dogs, including the first who I rescued from being dropped down an old pit shaft when I was 8 years old. Each and every dog taught me something about life and the best way of living. Now I have a chihuahua, the first one I bought as a puppy. She is such a cool dog and so laid-back she is almost horizontal. It has been interesting to have a problem-free dog and I love her to bits, as I have loved all my dogs. I can’t imagine a life without a dog.
I just gave Rosie a treat and told her it was from you. She has given you her seal of approval 🙂
Thank you Tez, what an excellent story. Your words are so very wise my friend. We can learn so much from our “best friends” can’t we. Rosie sounds a pure delight thank her from me, for her seal of approval! 🙂
Aww – this was so sweet Penny. I have been without internet all day ~ gosh has been hard being away. Have had the company of my adorable pup though — and you know, he’s gotten this jealous thing all of a sudden (now 4 years old). Not sure it’s jealous or he just likes being included in any affection that he witnesses! yikes ~ Love to you dear friend! x RL
Internet, a whole nuther world we inhabit, not too shabby either! 🙂 And I think your adorable pup likes being included, actually I’m sure of it. When we’re close to the animals we love, we become their “people” so he wants to share in all the good stuff too, lots of love dearest friend, xo
Not my quote but here it is: “The more I’m around people, the better I like my dog.” Oh, how I miss my dogs. Living where no pets allowed. At the moment. The future? Who knows? lol Love doggies. Thanks for the smiles today 😀
You’re welcome and I hope your not dogless for too long! 😦

I love my fur grandbaby. She sleeps on my bed despite her being my daughter and son in law’s dog. She has her own armchair, but prefers to sleep snuggled up on the recliner with me (half on me and half on the arm of the recliner), which makes laptop use…interesting. I do not know what I would do if anything happened to her. Just thinking about it brings tears to my eyes. At the moment, she’s cuddled up to her big brother Napoleon (he’s a monster Oriental cat) on the chair next to me. This is the story of when she became part of our family http://theencouragingscribe.wordpress.com/2012/07/27/just-sos-you-remember-im-the-boss/
I just read, Lyn, How wonderful, a truly fun and entertaining story also! Cats and Dogs, you gotta love ’em! 🙂
I have grown up with ‘fur-babies’. My last girl we had to put to sleep as she was 16 and arthritic. I swore that I would one day get a tattoo that meant something- I have her name and a paw-print on my left hip. I now mind dogs as a part time job, (2 border collies at home from last night for a week). I exercise them daily, they sleep inside in the warmth, they are cuddled, played with and loved till their ‘parents’ pick them up again. I am a huge fan of Cesar Milan, also training the younger pups I get to mind. Sorry for the cat owners and lovers – but in my world dogs rule 🙂 Good Post Penny.
I love it all, your wonderful memories, the tattoo and your part time job now, how excellent and I am a HUGE fan of Cesar Milan myself! 🙂 xx
Thank you Penny 🙂 yes the man is a Legend and I have learnt a great deal from him. x
They are forever faithful, I like the name that you chose
for him Rook with an ‘oo’ and how poshe sounding 🙂 🙂
Have a very nice rest of Tuesday Penny 🙂
Andro xx
He was my big ol baby, although no body messed with me or mine when he was around! Something funny though, Andro, he was afraid of thunder and all 95 lbs of him would try to climb on my lap, truly hilarious scenes would happen then! 🙂 xx
Yes I can imagine that scenario 🙂 I had a dog that enjoyed riding in the car with me but I mean right next to me in the passenger seat 🙂
I never needed to lock my doors on those occasions as he was such a fine guard dog, not bad for a Jack Russell Terrier 🙂 He was a lovely dog 🙂
Andro xxx
They’re a wonderful breed and very loyal too! 🙂
I had a Manchester Terrier too when I was just a wee lad, she was beautiful and had such a lovely temperament 🙂
Andro xxx
Am I keeping you up Andro, if I am I apologize! 🙂
No not at all, I have always been a night owl burning the candle at both ends, in fact I do most of my writing into the night 🙂 The witching hour as it were 🙂

Absolutely! I’ve always said there’s nothing like a dog! I had a German shepherd growing up and, even though he’s been gone 28 years now, we still remember him fondly. Currently, I have a miniature schnauzer who thinks he’s a Rottweiler. He’s 11 now, so I’m trying to enjoy every moment I have with him. The only think about dogs and all domestic animals is that they never stay around long enough. They make you fall in love with them, then they go off and die. But, I wouldn’t trade that love for anything,
I agree, agree, agree, I wouldn’t trade that love for anything either Alejandro! and your schnauzer sounds like he was quite a personality! xx
Great post , idobra opportunity of a post a comment. my dog is really the embodiment of a true guard dog , great , only has one flaw . need to watch what I’m talking about the front , because then everything izlaje the city constantly barks
Thank you Stefan, It sounds like you have a very good guard dog then! 🙂 xo
Last dog I had (only one I personally had) was a rescue and she was gorgeous. She died a few years back. We had to have her put to sleep as she had too much internal damage due to a life time of abuse. Her last three years were the best for her (in my opinion)
I’m happy for her last three years then! 🙂
I’m glad I could. She’s here: http://wp.me/pOTN0-ih
Yes, I agree, she looks like she was a wonderful animal Alastair! 🙂 xx
She was gorgeous. When we first got her, she was terrified of everything
Dogs are the best, Sasha was great (and Dante, for all his insaneness hehe). They are wonderfully clever and have better personalitites than a substantial number of people.
All pets do add a special something to human lives. There are so many kinds too. As long as we don’t forget they count on us, we’ve made them dependent, even for all that they give us, so our responsibility is to fill their needs too! 🙂
This is true and an important point, I think it is sometimes to easy to get complacent with pets or indeed anything including thinking that Dan Brown’s latest book might be worth a read.
Well that was an interesting reach, Dan Brown huh, she says as her right eyebrow goes up! I wouldn’t hold your breath on that one! 🙂
Dogs are some of my favorite people. 😉 xxx
Mine too! 🙂 xo
I love my dogs. Can’t imagine life without them. I had a dog, Tazzie, like your Rook. She was a rottweiler, lived to be 15+ which is ancient for a rottie. She changed my life in so many ways. Still have her collar hanging in our entrance way, her ashes saved to go with us when we go. She gave me Lyme disease (from a tick on her) and which almost ended my life and then through it all she saved my life. Thanks for your post, for letting me share about my special friend, one of the great loves of my life. Paulette
Tazzie sounds absolutely, amazingly, loving and wonderful, Paulette. What a great story. I adore stories like this. What our pets give to us is a thousand fold what we share with them! Thank you for sharing your story with me! xx
To be honest, I don’t like them at all – I prefer cats!
Well since at the moment I have two cats (Adopted them at 5 wks, and now they – brothers – are almost 6 years, and huge 21 and 30 lbs of love) they are my boon companions! So it would be difficult for me to pick a personal preference, however I love just about everything living so, well, there you go! Room for all in this world of ours! Thanks for stopping by and commenting Andrew! 🙂
absolutely got to agree, they are your best friends, our big boy [hunter way cross border collie] has been soothing me all night well i battled voices and was crying so scared.
such a un conditional love hey!
Hi, did you know that you are the proud owner of one of the smartest breeds of dogs on the planet, and they are intuitive, very! I’m guessing hunter was with you every second of the way. And I agree – totally unconditional love there! I’m guessing Hunter would make them go away if he could, but maybe you can with his help! xx
i to hope so penny it stops ,im exchausted and very scared
Relax, take some deep breaths and let it go. You’re safe now. Don’t let your thoughts take you to bad places my friend. Your safe now! xx
im trying to,its the voices
Tell them to go away, they can’t hurt you any more! You won’t let them! xx
Yes, definitely one’s best friend, constant shadow, and chief supervisor.
Hi Sarah, yes indeed, you stated that perfectly! 🙂
My dogs are just an extension of my hand… if I drop my arm, one will be there to get a scratch… just part of the family, always have been and always will be…
Yes, I can see that they would be that way with you Bulldog, Isn’t it a wonderful feeling (the shared comradery) my friend! xx
Reblogged this on The ObamaCrat.Com™.
You love your dog like I love my Missy. Here is an article I wrote about her http://selimaandthemerfolk.wordpress.com/2013/06/24/theres-something-about-missy/
Best friend indeed!! Well, ours doesn’t need a “special” treat, as every moment is special for us and her [I hope!]… our princess [and ruler of the house!]
big hug & big 🙂
PS in fact, taking a break to walk her right now [our 2nd of 3 daily]! 😆
Yay! Of course she rules the house Marina, (all is as it should be, lol) :). Enjoy your walk together, many hugs and love, xo
