Musical Inspiration

Vangelis is a brilliant Greek musical composer. His music is always inspiring. It is his own. With his music he speaks from the soul, adapting his individual style from an emotional/musical palette of sounds.

When Vangelis was asked to write an original music score for the movie Chariots of Fire, he watched the movied repeatedly; his inspiration came from both within and without (His own creativity, the captivating movie and each athlete’s personal and moving story). This youtube video shows him watching the movie while he composes on the piano, an inspiring piece to watch!

“Chariots of Fire” the movie from 1981, won 4 Oscars, including the beautiful musical score by Vangelis.

Athletic Inspiration

The movie tells the inspiring story of two British runners, Eric Liddel (The flying Dutchman) and Harold Abrahams, one Scottish and the other Jewish that bring glory to their country in the 1924 Olympics (an interesting note is that they feel the need to excel – viewing themselves as “outsiders”).

Filming Inspiration

The Movie by David Puttnam, producer, was cleverly directed by Hugh Hudson (He was inspired to pace the narrative and use slow-motion and freeze-frame cinematography during race sequences, sharpening the intensity of the moment and conveying the determination of the runners. (for those of you who would like to see some of this inspiring cinematography click on the link below. If you’ve the time, it’s amazing!)

The title for the movie was inspired from a poem by the illuminary William Blake who was writing about winning against the odds. The poem – And Did Those Feet,

…Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire…

William Blake (1757-1827)

Poetic/Writing Inspiration

William Blake, poet and artist is well received today for his expressive words and original creativity. He was inspired (in the 18th century) by the ideals and ambitions of the French and American revolutions. He also wrote from the heart.

Now if you’ve been paying attention, here is the Inspiration count:

  1. Athletes (runners) inspired to excel within themselves.
  2. Movie Producer inspired by the athletes’ story.
  3. Words from a poem by William Blake (Who was inspired by other’s overcoming and winning) chosen as the title of the Movie.
  4. Director inspired by the story to create special effects to enhance the runner’s determination to win.
  5. Musician inspired by the story and the movie to write the original music score. Plus countless others inspired by those you just read about.

Need I say more…Inspiration – Inspires, my friends, always! What inspires you … and who do you inspire?

Thank you for stopping by. Enjoy your weekend ~ wherever you may be!

I am inspired by people who can use words to change someone’s outlook
I am inspired by people who inspire.

Chariots of Fire music is one of the most recognisable pieces there are, up there with 633 Squadron (that may just be an English film), Indiana Jones, James Bond, Mission Impossible, Pink Panther, Star Wars and The Good, The Bad And The Ugly.

An awesome and inspiring post, Penny
