3:30 a.m.- Love, light and technology…

…to chase away the fears.

Two years ago – to the day, I wrote the following blog post! It is still one of my favorites (and a true story), for all the obvious “feel good” type feelings. Hope it works for you too!

It is the middle of the night. Very, very stormy outside. Thunder and lightning in all it’s majestic power. Asleep in my bed, I discover myself waking up, the sounds from the summer storm rousing me.

A small hand touches my arm …

“G.P.?”  A small quiet voice in the dark questions.

“Yes, Emma?” I respond softly. I live in a household that consists of several children, two adults, and assorted animals. As a reference point I am called ‘G.P.’ (a nickname) by all.

The youngest has woken from the loud thunder and bright flashes of lightning raging outside.

“The thunder woke me up”. She said.

“It did me too.” I say.

In very short order Emma is in bed next to me, wide awake. I get up, turning on the bed lamp before I leave to make coffee. A short while later I’m back, bringing a cupful of nice hot “wake me up” brew along with my laptop, a cup of hot chocolate for Emma and her DSI (Hand-held game/system). Since both are wireless, we can use them safely during the storm.

Franky, one of my two cats is also afraid of the storm, so at 3:30 a.m. we snuggle, occupy ourselves with our electronics, sip on warm beverages, and weather the storm with love, light and the technology of the day.

“G.P.?” Emma says as she settles in to play videos on her DSI.

“Yes, Emma?” I answer.

“I love you.” She replies quietly.

“Me too.” I reply in an equally soft voice.

And all is well in the middle of the night.

~

Have a great week everyone, stay as cool as you can in this summer heat, and stay safe from stormy weather!

The most beautiful thing in the Morning!

Morning Dove By Anncam

What is the most beautiful thing you wake up to each morning?

Hello everyone. I woke up extra early today. Well rested, my rising early was rewarded with the view of a glorious autumn sunrise. It was beautiful, absolutely beautiful.

Inside, in the predawn stillness, aromatic smells of freshly roasted coffee entice, the hot beverage is nectar to my taste buds. A second cup and my sleepy mind energizes. I whip up a batch of cinnamon streusel muffins all the while thinking … well, all sorts of good thoughts.

Everyone else is still sleeping, their minds filled with pleasant dreams from yesterday. Beginning on Fridays (in between chores and responsibilities) we seem to have extra does of creativity. Yesterday (after work and school), we played games, made cookies, and suspended our cares and worries for awhile.

It was late last night, when we retired. This morning the air is now rich with blended aromas of fresh coffee and baking cinnamon streusel muffins, and I hear sounds of others beginning to stir.

Sitting here at my laptop, I reflect on the most beautiful thing I can think of. And guess what? Beauty is all around me, everywhere. It’s Life. The little things that on many days I don’t notice. Today I’m reminded to be grateful.

For me, without a doubt, the most beautiful thing I woke up to this morning was another day (and I cherish it)! Having the ability to experience, share, give and receive. With full awareness of the blessings I’ve been given, I accept the responsibility that is mine for being able to be part of life and, with much love in my heart, I welcome the day and all that it has to offer – come what may.

Today, take some time to remind yourself how lucky you are and to be sincerely grateful. Life is filled with ongoing daily problems (some, really hard ones too) but you can weather the storm. If your heart is filled with love and gratitude for what you do have, your day can still be beautiful too. Blessings to all of you, this Saturday morning!

“Your blessings in life are always richer –
when recognizing them for what they are – A Gift to you!
Show your gratitude by giving back!”

Acts of Kindness – Coffee, Small Business and a Little Bird!

Starting today, each Sunday I will write a post and present acts of kindness that you the reader tell me about. Check the category at the top of this page. Click on it and share any act of kindness that has happened to you or someone you know. I will share these the following Sunday.

We know there are all kinds of big problems in our world today, but the everyday acts of kindness (perhaps considered small ones) that happen to/by everyday people often go unnoticed. I wish to share these, as I can. There are two acts of kindness to report about today. The first a personal one; the second shared by Lesley Fletcher.

BARRACUDA’S!

Barracuda7_2020789210_n

This act of kindness is a personal one that I’ve been wanting to share for quite awhile. There is a coffee house – Barracuda Coffee, here in Richland, (Tri-Cities) Washington where they serve great coffee.  And this weekend they are celebrating their 10th’ Anniversary.

But the act of kindness I’m going to mention began when we did not really know the owners personally. It was where “up until 3 years ago” my daughter’s husband Duane, would stop each afternoon to get her special cup of brew for her.

He’d always take a few minutes to joke and chat with them at the drive-thrudownload (5) window while he scribbled “I love you” on those little tabs put in the coffee lid to keep the coffee hot. Which they (the owner and the workers there) all noticed. It was also 3 years ago that Duane lost his life suddenly (in an accident) from a careless driver.

A few days after the accident I showed up to get my daughter’s coffee for her, One of the owners Michelle, came to the window and said, “I’ve given directions to the staff that Christina will never have to pay for her coffee, ever! Our way of remembering what a loving husband he was to a loving wife.” (And to save her the money for the cost of her favorite drink she would no longer be able to afford to buy.)

1016102_10151518891952057_1312113400_nAs I mentioned, it’s been 3 years. Her coffee is still free, as it is explained to each new employee who comes to work there. And beautiful and affectionate expressions are frequently written to Christina on the side of her coffee cup! Their expressions and attitude are generous and loving when they hand her the free cup of coffee – 3 years later.

As I mentioned at the beginning, this weekend marks Barracuda’s 10th year Anniversary and I can’t think of a better way to thank them than to let the world know what an amazing and loving small business Coffee Shop they are. There is no doubt that this act of kindness to Christina comes from loving hearts. And my daughter and myself stay very appreciative.

Each day Christina drops by to get her cup of coffee, made just the way she likes it! She leaves, her day a little brighter and a smile on her face. Some individuals/small business owners are pretty awesome aren’t they?

And one more thing: Check this out!

(And starting this weekend they are now serving beer and wine in addition to their deliciously brewed coffee!) If you’re a local, I encourage you drop by!

Please do check out and “like” their facebook page for the other acts of kindness (this community active small business stays involved with)!

As for us (Duane’s family), we can only humbly say, thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

The second act of kindness I am reporting comes from one of our fellow bloggers, the talented Author and Artist Leslie Fletcher:

Books & Art – Spirit & Soul(In Lesley’s own words) “I was nice and kind yesterday. While I enjoy the songs and the sight of birds and even speak to them and whistle to them from a distance, I am a huge chicken and have a bit of a phobia (Thanks Mum ;) ) always fearing they will end up in my hair which has been described as a nest anyway.
Yesterday I was washing my car and fiddling in the front garden when I heard my phone ring in the back. It’s not normal for me to put things down to answer a phone call but I did.
When I reached the back yard I noticed a black thing in the pool. On further investigation I saw it was a small robin. It was trying with all its might to somehow get lift off out of the salty water. I reached for the skimmer on a stick with a net at the end and took my life in my hands (Yes I just said that) to lift the exhausted birdie from the pool. Of course I was ready to drop everything and make a run for safe ground should he attack me and said hair.
As it turned out the poor thing was so exhausted and traumatized he lay limp with his head down and wings spread. I thought I was too late and that he died.
Softly and gently I lay down the skimmer pole and backed up. Every half hour I checked on him. Originally I left him in full sunlight so that he may dry. My first visit back saw that his feathers were dry but he had not moved. He was cheeping very quietly and I took this as a good sign. I carefully lifted the pole again and moved him to the shade.
In all he stayed put for 3 hours. And then he flew. And it felt so great to have saved a life.”

Thank you Lesley, for saving his precious little life. A rich and fulfilling feeling. And Act of Kindness most definitely!

~

And this concludes this segment of “Acts of Kindness for the week.” I look forward to hearing from you. Please share the acts of kindness you know of, I’m anxious to pass it on to others to remind us all that there are sharing and loving people out there who go unnoticed every day! Thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed,

A nice cup of coffee

What is it about a rich cup of coffee
That breaks up each passing day
Sipping the brew
Enjoying a view
Listening to what others have to say.

The aroma awakens our senses
Our pallets alive to the taste
We partake of the drink
We pause as we think
Then move on with our day in some haste.

Is coffee a part of reflection
A habit to fill in our day
An addiction of course
But a passage of sorts
A cup of coffee is the adult sort of way.

I’m sitting here drinking my coffee
beginnings of the new day
taste and aroma aside
this cup of coffee must abide
… until the next one happens my way.

This post brought to you by the color Brown!

The deeply rich or mellow color of brown. Brown is one of the textures of our life! From the time we can crawl and get muddy to climbing the brown trunks of trees. One of the shades of our hair and eyes. Drinking the brews of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate, all brown! So I now present to you one of the significant colors in our lives.

ps -This is me first thing this morning, pre-coffee, scary huh! Hey that reminds me Starbucks has a new coffee  roast out there (this is true actually – Google it). They are calling it “blonde coffee”.

I wonder if this means when you drink it that ” … you’ll have more fun and a caffeine kick to boost the experience”, lol! This post is a two-fer. two jokes instead of just one. 🙂 Take care of you, love ya’ all!

The Birthday Month

BirthdayHeart_corazón.svg

One day during the month of February I will have a birthday. The specific day doesn’t matter. I decided at around file000812859281file000978068007the age of 28 that the whole month is mine – at least that’s how I feel. I’m nestled in among some wonderful things here in the month of February. Valentine’s Day – the day of romance. But for half of the month there are hearts (and lots of chocolate) and pretty pink/red/white/gold things, and (lots of chocolates) and beautiful bouquets of flowers everywhere (and lots of chocolate) celebrating in advance the coming of the day of love. Not bad for starters.

And of course February is also the month where two of the most famous presidents of theGW1782 United States were SHSND-13496-Print-Lithographic-Abraham-Lincoln-Sam-Patrick-corborn. Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. In addition Thomas Edison, Charles Darwin, Jules Vern, Babe Ruth (hey, I like baseball), Susan B. Anthony, Michael Jordan (naturally I’d include the best basketball player ever), Steven Jobs (one of the geniuses of our generation), Victor Hugo (les miserables), John Steinbeck, and Mario Andretti (I love racing cars), were all born in the month of February. There are many more I just decided to illustrate a few. So not only was I born in a month filled with love but I was also born with very distinguished birthday associates.

On another historical note Dutch Bros. Coffee is a privately owned coffee chain headquartered in Oregon (mycoffee treat home state) It is this country’s largest privately held, drive-through coffee chain. The note of import here: They were founded in February 1992!

Finally and for toppers. February is the shortest month of the year and sometimes even shorter than others. So if you’re waiting for a paycheck the wait is much shorter in the month of February.

So then to tie the whole thing up in a nice little present like package:

aquarius22I celebrate my birthday with famous and distinguished individuals, have lots of love and get paid quicker!

It just doesn’t get any better than that. Oh, and my birthstone is Amethyst, and yes I am an Aquarius, actually should have included that in the above paragraph because everyone knows it is the age of Aquarius (the next several thousand years actually in terms of planet alignment and stuff like that of which I actually know diddle about but since it’s my month I decided to include it).

So if you would like to, you may wish me a happy “birth-month” as I lay claim to all 28 (this year) days of February!

Thank you for the visit, hope you enjoy a little fun and whimsy. Good for the soul!

Coffeehouse of Dreams II – Savoring Flavors!

file000232130324

A few of my fellow bloggers expressed a desire to revisit my Coffeehouse of Dreams and I am pleased to return on their behalf. This one with even more “flavors to savor”!

Languid … beguiling and bewitching, the aroma of coffee. I, seated in my corner table, inhaled; savoringfile0001890668403 the flavor through my sense of smell alone. Senses already heighthened by the familiar. The coffeehouse my home away from home. Not a hang out just a place where I can “be”. A comforting relaxing feeling.

Soothingly smooth and yet … there was a heightened sense of something more this evening! Yes …

…there it was! He was here again.

Standing just inside the doorway, searching the room for … me? Our eyes connected. His with mine. A special exchange.

An intimate look, beguiling but in such a gentle manner that I was disarmed before feeling any danger. The awareness there perhaps, but my senses were already intoxicated with the heavy aroma of freshly ground brewed coffee.

You know that luring blend of huskiness you can almost taste as you breath in. Confusing as to which is which, The coffee or the Intrigue. I couldn’t file0002018755666distinquish, not then and even today as I recall that evening … not now. Too much. A sensual overload of deliciousness.

No, I sat silently in the corner with my book and watched him make his way to my table. He’d already captured me with his eyes. The handful of people scattered around the room at various tables and booths a backdrop to the emotions I was experiencing as he approached.

He had asked if he could share my table, even had I wished him to leave in that moment I would have been powerless to refuse. Hypnotized by a sensation that was both familiar and foreign, I could not look away and just nodded, quietly answering “yes”.

He pulled out one of the empty chairs at my table and moved it nearer to me before seating himself. His eyes taking in my gaze during the entire maneuver. His hand reached across the table and covered my file0002108211823fingers holding my coffee cup with his own. Moving my hand along with his, he brought the cup to his lips sipping and savoring the richness. His eyes had never left mine. “Nice”, he said softly, placing his other hand over my free hand resting on the table top. “Very nice!” His voice seductive.

In that moment an incredible sense of déjà vu enveloped me. The known and the unknown merging into a thoroughly delightful wave of exotic blending, elevating the experience to well above anything I’d encountered before. Preparing me for something I would never have thought possible. Something undefined but exciting, not understood but accepting. My future dreams of love.

And as I’ve said before this, after all, is my coffeehouse of Dreams!

Thanks for the visit, hope you enjoyed,

~ Penny
