The Strength of A Woman!

Tears of Compassion

Tears do not make one weak. The salty liquid flows freely into the wounds of our trials, increasing resolve and determination to make things better – equal – balanced.

When looking at one of the symbols for justice, you will see it’s represented by a blindfolded female holding the balance scale. I’ve always found that intriguing and representative of how a woman’s role has historically been viewed – still is.

It is increasingly obvious that it is not the woman who is blinded by what she is or isn’t, but rather she is blindfolded by those who see her as – less than.

Personal strength is not about being more physically capable (although all bullies consider it so), strength is also about character, determination, our individual willingness and ability to care. To balance all of our human attributes with greater awareness and understanding and always with compassion. When a woman cries she demonstrates this – crying is not weakness. I repeat – not a weakness.

The sad truth is, too often, weakness of character manifests into physical brutality by an otherwise weak individual – to get their way. Winning by being mean, physically/verbally abusive and in the extreme, killing other people (even in the name of war) is often the easy way out. War achieves first and foremost – death and misery. Power, and the misguided belief “might makes right” has been in existence since the beginning of our caveman days,  and continues on today in many areas of society, government, and big business.

A woman’s compassion is one of humanity’s greatest survival strengths. A man’s physical strength poses for him some of his greatest’s blind-spots and handicaps. Most women want to protect all life, inherently a part of their nurturing nature, and a large part of their strength.

Those who view women as “lesser than” also tend to consider life as just another commodity to be used – as needs be. Again history bears this out. So does the repeated raping and brutality of women, children and the planet itself that we ALL live on.

Universally recognizing the female’s important and ‘completely equal’ half in the “human equation of life”, along with her amazing and natural strengths, can only assist mankind in truly becoming more balanced – it’s time for the blindfold to be gone.

Some things need repeating – if you’re a woman!

It’s your life – own it!

I first wrote this piece a little over a year ago, and I’m posting it again because I believe it’s a message that we (women) need to be reminded of – again and again!

More than half of the people on this planet are female (this includes you and I)! We are not a minority in any way and this is your life, we’re talking about here. You are the one that breathes in and out of your body every day. You are the one who should be deciding how you want to live you life. YOU!

In the following movie clip from Aliens the heroine “Ripley” definitely encounters more things than we can ever imagine having to cope with in our lives.

But there is a point here. When something needs to be done. She does it. She makes the decisions she needs to make and makes them count!

We may not be facing aliens but every day we face all sorts of things to be dealt with. Our choices, our life. This includes speaking out on our beliefs and rights and defending them if necessary. Decide and then make it happen. It is your life, Don’t let others dictate how it’s going to be!

In the meantime, enjoy probably the greatest sci-fi heroine ever! And yes, she definitely owns her life!

Thanks for your visit, remember stay strong and take care of you!

No Safe Side to Midnight – Scarier Sequel to earlier Scary Story!

I wrote (for me) a scary story a few months ago. The Safer Side of Midnight. Being Halloween I was persuaded to write a sequel to this story. We left our heroine in a rather precarious situation, happily she manages to get away (that’s another story though). But for this story it’s Midnight and our heroine is …

Scary story, part 2

No Safe Side to Midnight

Was this hell? She couldn’t tell! Things were so unclear, she opened her eyes, only to be horrified by what she saw staring back at her.

the beginning of evil

“Do you see what I see, my pretty one?” He leans in towards her, his words smooth, a sinuous whisper.

She shudders, struggling in a futile attempt to move, trying to look away even as his hands and arms hold her securely. Staring deeply into her lovely green eyes he notices the gathering cloudiness as they fill with fear, dread … and … something more.

“Ah, yes” He thinks. He feels both her fear and her growing desire. He pulls her closer, sighing deeply. His hot breath flays her flesh, while his lips rest gently against her ear.

“I can feel it, you know” he whispers.  “The evil without. The boundaries of your immaculate being contain an evil. Not inside your soul, mind you.” He pauses to laugh. “Not yet anyway!”

He laughs harder. A harsh sound, resonating like echoes from bat wings, flapping in a cave, wakening for a midnight feast. She closes her eyes, he continues to whisper, assaulting her other senses.

“The evil you wear without is of the finest veneer. A covering so paper thin as to have almost no existence.” His tongue savors her taste as he lazily laps an earlobe, pausing once again in contemplation. Her body shivers. He laughs. Playing with her emotions is such a delicious sensation.

“Yes, hardly there at all. This evil laid upon you in a previous life. You were so innocent, more easily tempted then, but it’s still there, your weakness. I feel this exquisite coating, layered upon the exterior of your soul. This ‘oh so slender veneer’ of evil calls you to me as does your purity.”

“Such a heady mixture of both, I can barely contain myself now that I have you, my ‘oh so’ pretty one.” His voice rich, sultry, seductive, playing with the nuance of each whispered word, hypnotic in its intensity of purpose.

the evil within

She feels him staring at her again! Compelling! She opens her eyes. His look, piercing. She tries again to turn away. Her fear, the captured prey of a wild beast. A beast as surely he is, and yet there is a longing – growing deep inside her – a craving, a desire! The fear is real, yet so is the growing need. How to resist? She senses him, can smell his heat and her own, a dampness to her skin, she shakes with the intensity of need, panting …

Waking suddenly, she sits straight up in her bed! Another nightmare. They were becoming more frequent and certainly more realistic.

More than a year since her escape from the cemetery. A lucky thing. The ‘being’ that had first spoken to her had whisked her away from the others. She still wasn’t sure how he’d accomplished this feat. Her body and spirit still badly bruised from the ordeal. He had left her in another part of the woods. His final words were, “I’m saving you for myself, I’ll find you later, after I take care of Him”. She wasn’t sure what sort of creature he was, but grateful for her life, she had made her way home.

And then she moved, far away. Changed her name, did everything she could to leave no trail. Created a new life. The past had stayed in the past until recently – when the dreams began.

What was she going to do now? During daylight hours she had begun to recall previous lives. She remembered the constant running but knew there was something else. But what? She needed to remember in order to protect herself; and even more to the point – why?

Why were they searching for her? Who were they? If it came to that, who was she and what is so special that she can’t remember? And in the meantime – Dear God! She covered her face with her hands. A nightmare when asleep, a nightmare when awake. Too much for any mortal to take, and now she’s beginning  to wonder – is she mortal? She doesn’t know anymore.

Looking through her bedside window she could see it was still dark outside. Did she even dare try to get more sleep? She had been safe during the day, since she moved. But now, he could find her in her dreams. And there were two of them chasing her, the creature from the cemetery and the demon he had summoned. It was all too much. Her memories of the past, her recent memories and now her fear.

What was she going to do?

“Perhaps I can help?” A voice said quietly, from the other side of her bedroom. There was someone there. In her room, sitting in the bedroom chair. Shadowy, indistinct but there, none-the-less …  and she was awake.

No safe side to midnight!

Don’t be Afraid of Living

Female by Penny L Howe, 2013

“Female” by Penny L Howe, 2013

There are many things to be afraid of

I’ve confronted a few in my day,

The Sun may not rise

the moon may not set

or things will not go my way.

.

The boogie man hiding under my bed

gave childhood nights filled with fear,

But what really terrified

during those scary times

was when no parents were near.

.

Don’t be afraid of living

For this is your time here on earth,

make the most of your day

give thanks ‘long the way’

for the blessing that was your birth.

.

For most of us what really scares us

isn’t a truth or a fact,

But our worries and fears

accumulated through years

Of what we don’t have or we lack.

.

Fear can be a mind killer, you know,

But it comes with a choice that is yours

you can stay paralyzed

and never realize

you can move on and open new doors.

.

Life is all about living

And no, there is no guarantee,

But with the will to survive

you still can thrive

That’s life – how it’s meant to be!

.

There isn’t a magic formula

well maybe … maybe just one,

each waking day

give big thanks and say

I BELIEVE that things will go my way!

(and then really believe it)

The Līgo Haibun Challenge – Young love for sale!

Another Līgo Haibun Challenge. For more information on how you can join in the creativity click on the Link mentioned here. This week the challenge for aspiring writers is the following prompt “Down at the Crossroads”. This week they are looking primarily for a narration; the telling of a story. They’ve also added musical color with an excellent musical video to the prompt which you can view by clicking on the link. My offering today:

dark stairs

Young love for sale!

The building, one of the older structures in the block. Though dilapidated and rundown it was off the main drag of the city and the rent was cheap. Her place, on the third floor. The dark stairway to her room, just inside the building. She walked slowly up each well-worn stair step. He, right behind her. Her third for the night, but she was already tired.

She was pretty and didn’t look her age, no trouble finding customers. She didn’t do drugs and didn’t have a pimp either. Hard to avoid, but she had a male friend who owned a martial arts school. No one messed with him.

Tonight she was weary, of life, of what she did for a living. But it had gotten her off the streets, well sort of. She sold her body on the street, but her soul belonged to her.  She had dreams for a better future. This one would be the last, tonight. Maybe the last one, period!

But she still looked good. Maybe she’d wait a little longer. Make a little more money, just in case. She’d think about it tomorrow. Reaching the top of the stairs she unlocked her door, smiling a little sadly and led him inside.

our futures await

poorly or wisely chosen

The Female Entrepreneur – growing the seed of an idea!

female entrepreneurI’ve had several careers in my life. Life experiences tended to change the direction I was going a few times. As I was also a single mom raising children during these changes, life was – well never dull! One of the businesses I owned was a marketing firm.

Today I’d like to talk to the women out there who dream of, or are getting ready to, or who have started a business that is relatively new. If you’ve been in business for awhile then I’m guessing you’ve weathered many of the business storms that can come your way and have a handle on most things by now.

But for those of you who are new to the game I’d like to, encourage and perhaps give you a few things to think on!

When I began to give marketing workshops for people who were small business owners, I discovered many of them lacked a couple of essential pieces of information about running a business. Perhaps the following words will be something for you to consider as you venture forth into the wide world of business:

~

A Business, A Tree – A Comparison

There is a tree standing alone. The tree is mighty. It is clearly one of the biggest and strongest trees in thetree area. Its branches are many and fully extended and developed. The leaves are a vivid green and well secured to the multitude of far reaching branches.

The peak of this magnitude reaches high into the sky.

Each year this tree produces bountiful fruit. Better and more plentiful than the year before. It knows when to produce the fruit; and when it is ripe for harvest it yields the fruit to the harvesters.

The climate and other environmental conditions alert the tree as to the nature of the activities it needs to be involved with all the year round.

The tree has survived because it is equipped with the understanding necessary for its survival.

~

blossomsNow picture the tree as a seed, recently planted, bearing no fruit. Picture yourself as a gardener. Because you want the tree to grow strong and healthy you plant the seed in rich soil.

However, before planting the seed you learned about all the conditions in the environment that could affect the seed during its early stages of growth. Next you found the best location suited for your tree.

As the tree grew you monitored your tree closely – fertilizing, weeding, watering – nurturing it carefully.

Year by year it grew but bore no fruit. This was a slow process but necessaryapples to insure the proper growth and structure of the tree itself. The foundation was important. To survive,  it would need to be well rooted.

As the tree continued its growth you pruned and cut back unwanted branches and buds as necessary so that the remaining buds could receive enough essential nourishment that would in turn produce rich fruit.

When harvest time finally came you knew the fruit was ready.

~

With each step, beginning from the seed, to planting, nourishment,  protection, and growth, you took the necessary time, energy and required learning to further insure the successful growth of your tree.

All this accomplished before your tree would produce and bear healthy fruit.

Single Red Apple on Grey Stone

The Seed of Your Idea

A business can be compared to this tree. Your product or service can be compared to the fruit. And most important your idea (for your business) can be compared to the seed.

As with the tree you must be familiar with the environment (market research) and all the other factors (business plan) that will influence the success or failure of your business idea. Where necessary you should learn what is needed so that you will be able to accomplish the necessary tasks.

selling apples

The beginning of a business (like a tree) needs to go through all the required steps before the eventual product or service (fruit) can be successfully produced and sold.

REMEMBER:

the seed – an idea

is but the potential

a place to begin

A strong and healthy, fruitful business is the successfully reality of growing and nurturing the seed of your idea -with many steps in between! So with this comparison in mind, go back and reread from the beginning.

I hope you enjoyed this piece on owning a business. I encourage all women who want to become an entrepreneur to go for it! There has never been a better time than now. If any of you have a particular subject they’d like to know more about regarding marketing, let me know. I would be happy to post an article about it.

thank you,

~ Penny

A Strong Woman

What is a strong woman today?

~

She is many things. She is an accepter of greater truths. Truths not spoken but understood. That is to say she absorbs experiences into her very being and waits to understand what the truth of this experience really means to her. And then she moves forward. Never backward. She knows she may fail. She understands this and when she does…

She gets up when she falls down…

She get’s up when she falls down …

She get’s up when she falls down.

~

She accepts responsibility for herself. She holds herself accountable for her actions. She is her own person. She belongs to no-one but herself.

~

She understands that often she is the glue that binds, in the home, In her work, In her community, In her church, In her work, in her world.

~

She cares. She understands that no one may quite understand her motivations in what she is doing, but that is okay because she knows.

She is not alone any more. She knows this now. She knows that on this planet called earth, females make up almost half of the human population.

And every single female who is growing up is sharing the learning experience of life with her.

She is the making of her own future predicated on the past of those before her. She is prepared. She is ready.

She is passion. She is love. She is life. She is what she is … A strong woman.

~

And she’s passing the message along, like I am today!
