She Is The Flow – Haibun (essence of female)

emrunning

The flow is the balance.

A runner of life, she knows flow is balance. She is the flow. Running through early morning golden meadows, hair streaming behind, her breathing is deep and even. Her element is air, flow is balanced. A runner’s secret, balance can initiate speed but speed is cause – not effect.

On this morning the soles of her feet touch fleetingly upon damp morning dew. Something occurs, an otherworldly melding of effect with cause. Balance is cause but time is effect. She runs on with balance enhanced. She is fleeter, running more swiftly, the blending of morning’s moisture with air melds microcosmic elements together. Magic? She finds she can now run through time. Her yesterdays, todays and tomorrows – a real/all-time effect!

Now she runs through life … her life and all life. An amazing thing.  An illusion? She runs on. She is a conduit of flow and the balance to life. An awakening discovery for her to recognize the strength within.

By the way: My previous post was not about me, even though I wrote it in the first person. It was a commentary about people, our current society and where “we” the people are and how we’re feeling about same. So just clarifying, I am fine, doing exceedingly well.

Have an great and wonderful weekend,

With affection,

The Flow of Words , haibun writing – an assignment!

By nioanto

Hi everyone,

I’ve been working on a blog dedicated to the writing of haibun for awhile now, but it has been ‘slow going’ for a variety of reasons. Today I’d like to pass along some information from a recent posting in The Haven of Haibun (this blog is still a work in progress – very few posts to date – but do visit if you’d like to.)

As for those interested in the ‘haibun style of writing’ read on:

Focus, Observation, and Flow of words. Key elements.

Consider the art of writing haibun from the singular purpose of capturing a flow when you write.

Your Assignment -Watch the flow of moving water in nature for awhile. Focus on the flow, observe its nature.

By vilhelmJourney to a nearby river, stream or the ocean and shore line. Even a fountain in a park will do. Any body of moving water near you. Take a journal along. When you arrive at this location, be in the moment mentally and physically. Take the time to experience everything happening with the water.

Walk along the water (if possible) for awhile. Watch the water’s movement. Observe the various currents. The water’s ebbs and flows. Whether rapid, fast moving swollen rivers, or gentle gurgling streams, notice the changes. The flow or flux (variability) of moving water in nature exhibits many of the characteristics with which we humans contend in our own emotional natures. There is a connection to be made here. You want your visceral experience to relate to your written word.

Think about how the water flows.

Haibun words should move in a like manner. While sentence structure defines how we connect words to one another to create expression and/or narrative, of even greater value for artistic writing is the ability to consider positioning or placement of each word used from the perspective of flow. A few examples:

There is a flower growing in the meadow.

a meadow flower grows.

Growing flower of the meadow.

Completing your assignment with your written words: Write a haibun that is a thought or memory of an experience regarding the flow of water. Sensations and emotional feelings can add much here.

See if you can match the flow of water to your words. Follow the general rules (read more here if needed) for writing your Water Haibun, (one or several paragraphs with accompanying haiku) and be sure to enjoy the process.

Good writing be with you,

Penny

Taking a Second Look!

There is beauty to be found in all things … if we but notice. A rose is always a rose, even when laying suspended and partially submerged in smooth flowing water. Might that also be true of many we meet? Slow down, pause, breathe in deeply, and then …

Take that second look. There is beauty in ALL things. Beauty that nourishes and lifts us up. You may be pleasantly surprised with what you view (and feel) if you just take the time to do so!

May your day be a good one for you.

My Thoughts on Writing haibun and haiku

Form, Balance, Flow

I have spent the last several months researching and studying the history of both the haibun and the haiku.

For those of you interested in reading a very brief understanding of these two writing terms, I have added this information today into the Ligo Haibun section (tab) at the top of this blog.

From the research, I learned the narrative (prose) portion of the haibun began it’s life, hundreds of years ago, as mere jotted down notes and comments in the journals of Japanese travelers. Later to be used for the purpose of assisting with the composition of the haiku (poem) of his experiences.

Eventually these notes evolved into what became it’s own literary style of work along with the haiku and thus the haibun was created and began to evolve.

I have kept a journal for much of my life. It was recommended to me, when barely out of my teens. And it became a life style habit of mine.

I’d write my thoughts, of the previous day, first thing in the morning (on days I didn’t work) or my thoughts, of the day, that evening when I would retire.

The interesting thing is I always felt the need to summarize my thoughts at the end. And yes, it appears that I was doing my own version of a very rough form of the same methodology of how the haibun originally came into being.

It didn’t take me long to realize, that I enjoyed the haibun style of writing because I was very much at home with it. Perhaps in a less refined style, I have still been writing in a similar way, in my own journal, for years.

My advice to those (and I do encourage you to begin to keep a journal for yourself) who write, is to give a try to writing a haibun. Join the Ligo Haibun Challenge. I don’t think you’ll regret it.

Proceeding on:
*

(some hints)

*

~ free yourself from a preconceived mindset of what you want to accomplish when you write ~
*
~ be there, in the moment ~
*
~ start with your own creative energy and think about how you feel about what you want to write ~
*
~ with the image in mind, view your interpretation of how you’d like to present it ~
*

~ write ~

*

My personal view:

The haibun: A meaningful narrative – ‘the body‘ and the haiku – ‘the heart’ of the piece. It is a work of art, a song in “word expressions” relating to your emotions/feelings in the form of a short story, opinions or series of thoughts. The haiku – the essence.

“In summation, to me, writing a haibun is about extending yourself within the form/balance/flow of the haibun (writing style), which can, in turn, expand the value of your presentation.

In other words you have the ability to improve both yourself and your writing skill as well as illustrate how powerful the haibun, itself, can be – through your own written words.” Penny L Howe, 2013

The Vertigo of Change

Suspended in the moment, I think “what is happening?” My emotions seem so intense, yet my balance with life so far removed from what it should be.

There is a feeling of dizziness and beneath that is this amazing rebirth I feel emerging inside me; basic, elemental and needed.

The coordinated dizziness, internal sensations of MY awakening while technology races on. I am swept up in a matrix of life’s design. I marvel from one heartbeat to the next at who I am and what I will be.

If I can just find my balance, the future is waiting for me.
