Hugging is Healthy For You – Fun Too!

Today, give lots of extra hugs!

Not only does it feel wonderful for both parties,  it is also a very heart healthy thing to do.

I hope you are taking care of yourselves, remember if you aren’t well not only can you not accomplish your own personal goals but you can’t be there for others when you’re needed.

Have a wonderful day and week ahead,

With much affection (and hugs)

“Nothing better! The foundation of life that we grow upon. Sharing of ourselves with each other. Family is only as strong as it’s weakest link, be there for yours. The results will be astounding!”

What do you believe in – And does your body believe you?

I truly believe there is a reason, I don’t have Crohn’s disease anymore. (and haven’t for 20+ years, and I was told “like cancer”, it is always there in the cells somewhere, or the capability of it reoccurring after my first surgery) I struggled with this disease for 20 years (awful problems, hospitalized more times than I care to recall – seemingly never ending) until I woke up one morning and just said … “No!”
Now I understand – that on that day, all four areas of the parts of my brain were in alignment (communication with each other) in that moment. So my “No” came equally from my emotion center, my cognitive center, my spiritual (belief system – whatever that may be for each of us) center, and my subconscious bodily activity center.
In other words, the chemical instructions via our neural pathways to the brain from each of those areas of activity sent the strongest message ever to my body that it could heal itself. And it did.
This could be perhaps, a possible explanation for those who survive the trauma of illness or life experiences. Not mystical voodoo, just all parts of ‘your being’ decided it can “fix” what needs to be fixed (remember we ‘mostly’ only use a small fraction of our brains total capability.
These are only my own personal thoughts being shared here, based on the history of my health but I’ve come to call this occurrence “The Alignment of our Being”. Usually we (Our conscious self) are at odds with one or more of these  interactive mental activities going on each day.
Memories, thoughts and actions center around those 4 centers of our being. If I look and feel 20 years younger, it’s because I sincerely feel 20 years younger and believe it, so my body does too, and acts on that belief. And of course it’s a no brainer that healthy living, lifestyle, and reducing the stress of the day just makes things even better.
So that’s it, give my  “Alignment of Being” idea some thought.
(The above are just a few ideas I shared in an email recently with a friend. I decided to pass it on to you too … for your consideration!)
All my best to you, have a great day today!

Going Banana’s – Updated

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAbout a year ago I wrote about bananas. A post about the “fruit” of it all – The Banana! One of my favorite fruits, simply yummy and delicious!

We eat more bananas in the United States than apples and oranges combined. In some parts of the world, bananas keep millions of people alive.

Although extremely popular, the banana is mysterious; nobody knows how they evolved or from where they originated. Entire Central American nations have been said to rise and fall over the banana.

There are very real concerns about whether the banana of today will survive. As the result of commercial enterprise the (Cavandish) banana with its very own specific reproductive system, is now a genetic duplicate of the next, and highly susceptible to the same blights. Today’s yellow banana is increasingly threatened and there is as yet no cure.

Scientists are focusing on banana varieties still found in nature. Wild bananas can still reproduce by seeds andbanana's by copyright by nick b are constantly confronted with fungi. I stay hopeful researchers will discover resistance genes that can be transferred to the now seedless varieties. (A return to a more natural approach might be a good idea.).

And Bananas are very, very good for you. Rich in nutrients, vitamins, minerals and fiber – A source of energy. They help people suffering from anemia, can help in reducing high blood pressure and preventing bone loss by lessening the damage done by foods containing high levels of sodium/salts (found in the typical modern American diet). They can also help to balance blood-glucose levels and reduce mood swings.

Bananas are excellent for those suffering with ulcers. They can help lower gastric juice levels and build a protective coating in the stomach and in reducing heartburn symptoms. Bananas contain tryptophan, serotonin and norepinephrine which can lessen depression and also help a person to relax.

just-bananasThe B vitamins found in bananas help calm and soothe the nervous system, vitamin B6 in particular which can reduce the symptoms of irritability and sleeplessness.

Bananas help to lessen cravings for sugar and other sweet snacks. They are helpful in preventing age-related macular degeneration and strokes.

Even the peels serve a few useful purposes. They make a great fertilizer in the garden, especially for roses. Bury a few peels near the bush, and the peels will normally cause the roses to thrive. Pimples can be dried out naturally by rubbing the inside of the banana peel on the affected area on the skin.

As for me I try to include a banana in my daily protein smoothy. But what I really love is Banana Ice Cream. And the exciting thing is it’s made entirely from bananas – nothing else.

Save up those bananas that are beginning to be not quite but almost too ripe to eat. And/or just use fresh ones. Peelbanana-ice-cream-1 the bananas, cut into small bite size pieces place on a tray and freeze. Once frozen I put the frozen pieces in baggies and keep them in the freezer until ready to use. When your ready to make banana ice cream you:

  • Remove frozen bananas from the freezer (2 or 3 per person
  • place the banana pieces in a powerful blender or mixer
  • Blend
  • Add only a few pieces at a time

This does take a while.

banana-ice-cream-2There is enough fat in the banana and water that has been frozen in the bananas along with the natural sugar that by blending it long enough you end up with “Banana Ice Cream”.

If you like bananas you’ll love this healthy treat! The taste is so incredibly ice coldbanana-ice-cream-3 creamy and yummy, it really is banana ice cream!

Give it a try, good for you and so delicious! Great for a hot summer day! It was 106 degrees here yesterday. Will be 104 today. Stay Cool and thanks for stopping by,

An Antidote for Fear, Anger and Guilt

There are some words that when understood and utilized actually activate your life’s energy flow. A proven fact. They can fortify your immune system (so you’re healthier), strengthen your resolve of things and assist you in overcoming doubt and other obstacles in your life.

file3421246505623Love – Unconditional acceptance and understanding empathy for the human condition.

Faith or Belief – The pure feeling and revelation of our relationship to creation and the infinite.

Trust – Confidence, believing in and relying on the qualities of integrity and goodness.

Gratitude – A feeling, a humble emotion of sincere and heartfelt thankfulness.

Courage – Bravery, the quality of the mind enabling one to prepare for danger even through fear.

file7241263059338Sounds good doesn’t it! Well if you’re in a store that stocks those items to purchase, you can say I’ll take one of each,  just put it on my bill!

If they came in the form of a pill, we’d pop the pills into our mouth in a heartbeat.

Unfortunately it doesn’t work that way. There’s a little more effort on your part required. The good news is that all are readily accessible, you just need to change your mind on how you view yourself and your capabilities.

So how can you accomplish this?

The “you” who is convinced of what you can’t do, and your head full of all the reasons why.

You believe you can!

You change your ATTITUDE!

You wake up tomorrow and say “I CAN DO THIS” !

You go through each day regardless of what happens believing you can do it!

The only one stopping you is … you,

your fears, your anger and your guilt.

So there you go.

The antidote you need, yours for the doing!

Have a great week,

When it comes to “blonde jokes” …

blonde joke

If I hear just one more …

When I saw this beautiful horse with a blonde mane I felt it a moral imperative to post this piece about blonde jokes. Although I’m guessing this horse hasn’t heard as many “blond jokes” as I have (lots and lots), so here’s a few to lighten your load today but first a disclaimer:

As an official blonde … I approve these jokes! Since we’re really amazingly intelligent (I say with great and humble modesty), these jokes don’t really bother us – much! I will add that if you laugh too long and too hard I will be able to find you!

Locked Out of Car

Two blondes lock their keys in the car. One of the blondes tries to break into the car while the other one watches. Finally the first blonde says “Darn, I can’t get in the car!” The other blonde replies “keep trying – it looks like it’s going to rain and the top is down”.

Keeping a Blonde Busy

Q: How do you keep a blonde busy for hours? A: Write “Please turn over” on both sides of a piece of paper.

Penny L HoweThe interesting thing about “blonde jokes” is that they exist at all! Hair color is not a determining factor for intelligence for either women or men and yet the jokes abound. Psychologists have not been able to come up with a satisfactory reason for the why of this. As for myself, how I feel about being a blonde is summed up quite easily – “viva la difference” -or it works for me!

Thanks for visiting, it is a very good thing to not take yourself too seriously. Sometimes laughing at yourself is a very good thing, have a great day and a better tomorrow!

Happiness …

Infinite Possibilities

So there I was drinking my daily smoothie (energy drink – I’ll share the recipe at the end of the post!) and thinking about the topic I was going to write about – Happiness.

I glanced at my smoothie (half gone) and the analogy “Is your glass half empty or half full” came to mind. I recalled reading the following comment in a twitter last night.

“My glass is half full because I can’t be bothered

to get a refill!”

The words stayed with me. I wondered how many times in our life an opportunity has passed us by because we couldn’t be bothered. I’ve heard the expression that luck happens to those who are busy making it happen, but that one never really sunk in.

This one did. I think because I’ve been a person who has always tried to see a glass half full (although the glass did get misplaced a time or two lol).

So this is a little different. Perhaps the glass should be thought of as something to be filled, not just the half way perspective, perhaps overflowing even ,,, now that’s a thought to think on!

A happy One! Have a great day ~ Penny

My Smoothie:

  • Two peeled frozen bananas (broken up)
  • a handful each of 2/3 kinds of fresh/frozen berries
  • 1/2 cup oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup yogurt (plain)
  • 25 grams of whey protein (or other if allergic)
  • 1/4 cup water

Pretty much I put the above items into a blender in the same order

as listed and then blend until well mixed! Enjoy, it does taste good!

And it is very good for you (an added bonus) 🙂

The Places I Blog

If anyone is curious this is my summer blog/office.

I actually have three locations. The first is my bedroom, sitting up in bed with my laptop enjoying morning coffee.  Franky and Jonny actually have the room they need to be interactive and loving with me. Between the two of them we’re talking more than 50 lbs. of cat. What can I say; they’re my guys, my BIG guys.

The second location is the family room, where everyone hangs out – on and off – during the typical day.  Sometimes noisy but most delightful in a good interactive way with children/friends coming and going, a teenager w/friends coming and going, and adults/we discourage a lot of coming and going with adult friends. That’s more of a let us know when you’d like to drop by kind of thing.

And the third I already mentioned, the patio outside. It works on sunny/cool days, not so much on overtly stormy or roastingly (I know it’s not a word but it works for me) hot days!

And just so you know, I tastefully omitted any references to the ongoing chaos that accompanies a house with 2 adults, 2 preteens, 1 teen, 2 dogs (1 little, 1 large) and 4 cats. I did this to keep up the appearance the photos hopefully represent, ambiance in a pleasant and comfortable habitat. Did it work?

Oh, Oh! …Tempus Fugit (A Latin expression for time flies.). It’s time for a smoothie. I love smoothies. This one has (I don’t use a measuring cup people, it’s a ‘personal what-you-like thing’ but if anybody wants to know the approximates I’ll be happy to share) fresh blackberries, strawberries and blueberries, a frozen banana (Thank you Alton Brown from Good Eats on the food channel – great tip about what to do with the slightly too ripe bananas. Peel the bananas, wrap with plastic wrap and put in the freezer.) Anyway after the fruit I add a handful of uncooked oatmeal (boosting the fiber) and some plain yogurt (probiotics) Doesn’t it sound healthy? Well its also delicious!

Okay, back to my writing while I sip on my smoothie. Tomorrow’s the day I respond to the wonderful blogger awards I was recently given by some very nice people. Everyone have a good day, today! And yes I am now headed outside to my 3rd office!

One more thing, I can’t help myself, a photo of my cats when they were adorable little kittens. I’m constantly asking myself – What Happened?
