Progress Never Sleeps ~ Haibun for Yesterday!

The Oil Lamp …

standing upright much as a soldier on parade. The base, cleaned and refilled, silver burner polished to gleaming brightness. The wick trimmed, now standing in attention. Glass chimney thoroughly scrubbed so not one single speck of soot mars the surface.

The oil lamp stands on the table in a modest home.  Now to be found in many homes. At the ready for the approaching night when once again it will light the way from darkness to light  for those to appreciate man’s great progress.

yesterday’s progress
most wondrous thing to behold
now it never sleeps

The Thing is … Are We Lost or What?

going_with_the_wind

And the other thing is we all know it’s true. At least those of us being honest with ourselves. today’s mess came about slowly and in a rather insidious manner as we in the “civilized societies” became accustomed to listening, then viewing, then participating in the latest great new commercial thing, including gas guzzling or electronic machinery and now modern technology.

Problem is we haven’t kept pace, in terms of full awareness and understanding of “effects” that so many of these ever increasing “modern” changes have caused to our lifestyles. Mega Industries whipping out processed food (with much of the natural things leeched out and many artificial chemical preservatives added). The never ending new tech. devices. plastic toys, plastic wrap and plastic bottles (plastic everything actually) all for the sake of convenience creating an out of control approach to what we eat, how we eat and when we eat. How we do, what we do and when we do it.

The breakdown of many family units who struggle, on the one hand to keep up, but meanwhile seem to be able to have many of the technological devices (at the expense of more debt). And meanwhile most of the people on the planet are poor, or much worse. Our responsibility – YES! Because it is the mega companies going into these emerging countries (as well as our own) that, in many cases have increased their poverty through irresponsible activities so their gigantic concerns can make more money!

Everything is so mixed up. Billions are wasted annually, by our government to “protect” us. But nobody’s really keeping an eye on how the money is being spent and why.

The oceans are filled with plastic refuse and other waste, detritus and litter. We’re using up our “fresh” water at an alarming rate. We’re poisoning our lands and killing millions of creatures annually through neglect and careless decision making.

I could go on and on. But we already know these things. Take our great country of USA. I am proud to be an American, and of the bravery of our soldiers who’ve been sent to foreign shores, many to not return, or who return wounded (and should be honored and helped, not forgotten as many are). But I’m increasingly ashamed of my government. Who seems to be oblivious to the damage we’re doing to ourselves and our lands.

Politicians (for the most part) are more concerned with being re-elected and keeping their salary or are power hungry and all to frequently buying or should I say selling into those gigantic mega International Conglomerates, I mentioned earlier, because of financial support they will receive. We’re pretty sure if a politician speaks we’re being lied to. And for good cause.

If a politician isn’t busy being involved with cultivating people and influence then they appear to spend the rest of their time pointing fingers and accusing those with whom they are in disagreement. To the end nothing much gets accomplished at the government level, except chaos, confusion and disagreement. And I believe this is true in many other countries as well. Money, commercialization, commodities, greed, and the need for having it all, have replaced many important values we as a people need in order to survive and thrive.

We have lost our way, and I’m fearful that it will take some severe natural disaster for us to come to our senses and work together again, as we always do in times of crisis and disaster – and why is that, anyway … why can we only be good to each other when conditions are extreme?

What’s the next step? What can we do to help? I don’t have an answer, I feel in many ways I’m just one of the many that is part of the problem here and unless we the people, unified can come to a consensus and make some hard choices to change our current out of control lifestyles (so filled with daily waste and neglect), to work on improving our attitudes about one another, I fear things are not going to improve any time soon. In my opinion.

And I’m an optimist by nature, so that’s saying something. I hope my words hold some value and you’ll consider them carefully. I do believe each of us can make small changes that can be of help and I know there are those doing that very thing. So I stay hopeful in spite of all my words above.

I do believe in mankind, although I also believe it is time for more women to be in positions of power. We’re more empathetic, more willing to listen to other viewpoints besides our own, and (because we bring life into the world) are far less likely to see war and the killing of innocent lives as a solution to things. Again in my humble opinion, only.

Sincerely,

~ Penny

The Wisdom of Yesterday – Lost or just forgotten?

yesterday

*

“Yesterday is many things, a memory, a part of our journey, a learned lesson.

But the one thing it should never be … forgotten!” ~ Penny

*

The technology of today is exciting, and no doubt it will be even more exciting tomorrow.

But today I’d like to briefly mention the very transitory period of time in which we (you and I) will be here. So to what purpose do we allow inundation of  newness? It is one thing to improve communication and other technological marvels, quite another to become so immersed within it, that the focus of reality is pitched into virtuality and the next “new thing”.

And I might add at considerable expense in terms of quality of life in our “real world” (you know the one removed from artificial things – if that’s even possible). Health, relationships, values, ecology, life on this planet – all these and more are taking a beating here.

The future looks good only if we do pay attention to the wisdom of yesterday. Lots of beautiful quotes out there in multimedia land, wise words from the past, but again to what purpose if they’re just pretty words reflected upon in the moment.

Turn off your electronic devices for a portion of each day. Focus on things happening in your immediate vicinity.

See … really see … your today, unfettered by online influences. Decide how you can change your life and others for the better.

Your today will soon be yesterday, and we don’t want it to be forgotten!

With much affection to you,

~ Penny

dot.(com) what may!

The Passion of Creativity

Well here we are. It is the year 2014. Nothing seems to be larger than interactive internet and the innovative technological inventions that permeate all, totally and completely overwhelming, and we are extremely addicted to same.

So what’s next? I don’t know but I believe it will be exciting and a very good thing. The global internet (as we know and understand it today) has brought people from all parts of the planet closer together. There is the business to business aspect of partnering world-wide (ecommerce), for not only multinational concerns but also the small business entrepreneur, and even greater than this is the private citizen’s amazing ability to communicate almost immediately, anywhere with anyone.

Team Spirit

More humans on the planet are understanding that the passion of a thing (fires the hard work that is necessary and) can produce results. And building reality from a dream, happens faster with a team and team spirit. (One only has to look at Silicon Valley to fully be aware of this.) Many, many, more humans are realizing there is potential, and that their dreams can become reality. The internet fosters those dreams and this is a very good thing, I believe.

hopeful dream to idea

Hopeful Dream to Idea to …

In conclusion I’d just like to add, there is no doubt or question that we humans are the proud parents of the Internet and while our baby continues to grow, we will continue to learn and grow with it. Why? Our passion for the creative, our need to grow as humans and our desire to be all we can be … come what may!

Congratulations to Jack Ma, his wonderful team and of course Alibaba … May you live long and prosper!

A Vertigo of Change – Humanity’s Design!

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

A Vertigo of Change

What a place – the world we live in today. A wonder, indeed, to be able to make it through each and every “ever-changing” day!

Suspended in the moment, thinking to oneself “what is happening?” Emotions so intense, and balance with life so far removed from that which was.

Sensations of dizziness, yet beneath this . . . one feels an amazing rebirth emerging inside; basic, elemental and needed.

Coordinated internal images and creative processes awakening while technology races on. I do keep pace with all, and yet, am swept up in a matrix of life’s mysterious design. I marvel from one heartbeat to the next as to who we are, and what we shall become.

If we can only but find our balance, the future – our future – awaits the fulfillment of creation’s dream.

A most excellent weekend to all my wonderful friends, both those I’ve come to know and cherish, and those I’ve yet to meet!

3:30 a.m.- Love, light and technology…

…to chase away the fears.

Two years ago – to the day, I wrote the following blog post! It is still one of my favorites (and a true story), for all the obvious “feel good” type feelings. Hope it works for you too!

It is the middle of the night. Very, very stormy outside. Thunder and lightning in all it’s majestic power. Asleep in my bed, I discover myself waking up, the sounds from the summer storm rousing me.

A small hand touches my arm …

“G.P.?”  A small quiet voice in the dark questions.

“Yes, Emma?” I respond softly. I live in a household that consists of several children, two adults, and assorted animals. As a reference point I am called ‘G.P.’ (a nickname) by all.

The youngest has woken from the loud thunder and bright flashes of lightning raging outside.

“The thunder woke me up”. She said.

“It did me too.” I say.

In very short order Emma is in bed next to me, wide awake. I get up, turning on the bed lamp before I leave to make coffee. A short while later I’m back, bringing a cupful of nice hot “wake me up” brew along with my laptop, a cup of hot chocolate for Emma and her DSI (Hand-held game/system). Since both are wireless, we can use them safely during the storm.

Franky, one of my two cats is also afraid of the storm, so at 3:30 a.m. we snuggle, occupy ourselves with our electronics, sip on warm beverages, and weather the storm with love, light and the technology of the day.

“G.P.?” Emma says as she settles in to play videos on her DSI.

“Yes, Emma?” I answer.

“I love you.” She replies quietly.

“Me too.” I reply in an equally soft voice.

And all is well in the middle of the night.

~

Have a great week everyone, stay as cool as you can in this summer heat, and stay safe from stormy weather!

To Be … Not Who I Am!

Prawny1Deus ex machina

When words become less than the sum of their parts.

When that which I read and write becomes copied, duplicated, downloaded, passed on, reproduced and SHARED in every conceivable format and platform, and when words drift together even as they break apart into smallest bits and pieces, micro particles drifting briefly through my consciousness; this turbulent confluence of everything makes me not more knowledgeable but actually – less aware.

My individual thoughts and creative energy become stifled. I find I lose reference points and meanings, all words are conjoined and absorbed into a streaming repetitious miasma of composition in which my individual say … my voice … is lost.

Is our communication technology, ‘so happily embraced’, a manifestation, tearing away at the fabric of creation even as it proudly proclaims itself as our new savior for instant todays and tomorrows.

Then what is this thing, this piece of machinery, this “Deus ex machina”? This wonder of man’s technology, making us no more than a multitude of multimedia byproducts, a consumable, accumulated, consumption of words in instant trending and streaming data.

And what of my me-ness? Your you-ness? Our original #ideas #essence #words.

Are they and we being swallowed up into a larger whole, no longer represented as unique individuals with our very own splendid originality?

But then if not – who are we?

* * *

So clearly, the muse was upon me. I hope you enjoyed my whimsy and a smidgen of irritation with various multimedia intrusiveness. Naturally I was not referring to any of my most excellent online friends, writers, bloggers, artists and photographers. After all we are above all those petty things! Of course! 🙂

Have a wonderful weekend, stay safe and take care of you,

~ Penny

With Eyes Wide Open – Information Technology in our lives!

By clarita

THE BAD Too much information. Too much opinion. Too little thought. Too quick to respond so you’re not making informed decisions. Too little time to allow change to happen correctly in the offline world. Too much, too fast!

THE GOOD More people connecting around the world, More people sharing, More people learning, More people reaching out to others. More is a very good thing here. An excellent thing, actually!

The good and the bad things connected with all of the instant connectivity of information in our lives is overwhelming. Throw in commercial enterprise and politics and it is absolutely impossible to know what is true and what is false. On the scary side it does seem as if everyone is selling something to someone else. Whether its a product, a service or a mindset (think politics here)!

There is really no way around the fact that each day we are overwhelmed with more information than we can reasonably assimilate.

So what to do? Easy deal. Slow things down. Turn it off. You decide for how long. A few minutes, A day, A weekend. More. It will all still be there when you return.

Connect with things outside of multimedia. This means no computers, no tv and no iphones or ipads. Now there’s a thought.

Inconceivable? I don’t think so.
Necessary, I would think so, most especially with eyes wide open.

Have great weekend!

What do we do next? We bloggers, We artists, We people …

In the digital world of today … how do we not just survive but thrive?

Credit line: © Ale1969 | Dreamstime.com

It’s Tuesday, so what do we know today? We know we have things we have to do – And we know we have things we want to do – We know there is some information we want or need to know more about – and far more information that we don’t have a clue about (what-so-ever, except it’s messing us up a lot) because it’s too much to deal with (emotionally speaking). And “way” too much of the information is negative, isn’t it (TMI- Right?) But, there you go, the above sums things up nicely, I believe.

So what do we do next?

First, understand the nature of the online world; behind the scenes what is going on. Here’s the truth – Many (almost all) corporate/government entities are “crowd sourcing” (gathering information) to create digital profiles. In a nutshell finding out all about you. You’ve made it possible. You’re one of the hundreds of millions online exposing yourself through many little data bytes circulating the airwaves.

And the “Big Boys” of the planet want to know all about you either as a consumer (to potentially buy their product) or as a citizen of their country (How you feel about your country, the issues, your concerns the politicians, etc. Research that will help them raise money and/or potentially influence you to get your vote OR making sure you aren’t doing something subversive, detrimental to your country’s well being.)

Like it or not that is what’s going on, right now. Data collecting of a volume inconceivable for most of us to imagine and each entity (depending on the quality of their “industry cloud capability”) is efficiently organizing the data into a variety of profiles for current or future reference. Is it the big brother era? Well sort of. But we’ve made ourselves willing partners in this intrusive aspect of the online experience, whether we know it or not!

Meanwhile you’re busy doing your own gathering of information, gathering as a citizen and a consumer yourself. So how do you handle all of this information and your awareness of everyone else’s information gathering.

Short of something really bad happening (meteor strike, large solar flare, etc.) all this data is going to continue to be gathered (and much of it circulated). Just a fact and there will be lots of “talk” because that’s what talk shows (in all media – News programs, etc.) do – and much of it is negative because “viewership” (that’s you) goes up when they (talk show hosts and their “expert” guests) talk about ‘what’s wrong’.

So the talk shows are going to talk about all sorts of never-ending stuff that will complicate you life and view of things (if you listen too much) even more. But let’s forget that for right now and get back to you and where you are.

Woman News Credit line): © Bowie15 | Dreamstime.com

Turn your computer off and think about your goals, needs, wants and desires. Consider how you might achieve them. View online connections as “how” they may help you. Be specific here. Everyone is giving “advice”, suggestions and in many cases “selling something”. So your main focus should be why you’re on line.

  1. To be Entertained
  2. To Find out information on a subject
  3. To Buy something
  4. To Sell something
  5. Socially connect with other people
  6. Promote Yourselves (through various social networks)
  7. Use any combination of the first six reasons you’re online to assist you in accomplishing your own goals

So where you go next is to make a plan of action to more effectively use your connectivity. Arrange the above reasons and allot a time period (yes – a little discipline is required here).

  • If you’re a student researching – stick to getting the info. before you “game play” or check out the latest trending YouTube video.
  • If you’re an artist, search for “like minded” creative individuals who will help you nourish your creative goals.
  • If you’re selling something, learn about your perspective customers. And how to reach them (online and off).
  • if you’re a professional in an industry and are job searching, focus on those companies and their background so you’re well informed about the company and their goals before you submit a resume! And yes they will be using the internet to check “you out” this process can take many months – so be prepared for this one.
  • If you’re buying something (take the extra time to check out the source before your purchase – be a smart consumer.)
  • If you want to be entertained – go for it, there’s all sorts of fascinating things waiting to be viewed/listened to – out there.
  • and if you just want to “hang”, be social with others, start a blog, join Facebook, learn how to Tweet or find a social media platform that fills this need.

But don’t forget your offline world. Organize your time so your online time has a sense to it with very specific timelines.

Credit line : © Nihonjapan | Dreamstime.com

The most important thing to do with your online world of connectivity is to stay in command of both the offline and online you. You need to stay in control of the amount of “data” your mind allows entry to. Integrate this brave new world of communication so it works for you on your adventures through life … not against you!

Have a great day,

~ Penny

Our Matrix, which pill (blue or red) and baked cookies!

How many of you have seen the movie “The Matrix“? If you haven’t, much of what I’m suggesting might be lost in translation but here goes anyway!

In the movie, most of the people live in ‘the world of now’ that has actually been created by a computer program (The Matrix). In the matrix everyone goes about their daily lives believing that everything they do is real!

When Neo (the protagonist, hero) is asked to chose between taking a symbolic red or blue pill, each pill has a purpose that will allow his mind to either see the falsehood of the matrix world (blue pill) or make him forget that the world he is living in isn’t the real one (red pill).

To confuse the issue even more, he is told he may be the “chosen” to lead humans out of this Matrix world they are trapped on. But how can he know this? In fact he finds it hard to believe. So he meets “The Oracle”, a highly intelligent psychic resembling a sweet middle aged lady who “knows” things and who loves to bake cookies.

Today I’m baking cookies (like the Oracle) sugar cookies in the shape of autumn leaves and we’ll be painting them with colored confectioners icing after they finish baking. Fall colors of course.

And what does baking cookies have to do with red and blue pills and the movie The Matrix? Pretty much everything. Because we are living in a fantasy. I mean honestly, is it realistic to gorge ourselves on fast food and pre-prepared food to the tune that we have become an obese nation with many illnesses as a result.

Is it realistic to live in a country where while we argue about the reopening of the government and the reasons why we need to continue government business as usual, we are still so many trillions of dollars in debt that it boggles the mind.

And is it reasonable for people to get up (except for those in the starving countries – many – although in the matrix of our lives they don’t exist except as intruding sound/video bytes of information that get quickly moved aside for something more interesting that’s – trending) and go through each day, knowing things are not really okay but just keep going anyway – by tuning in (electronically) and tuning out what they don’t want to hear or know about! Yes definitely the Matrix at work here.

Time to take a pill my friends. The red one – oblivious continuation of ignoring what we are doing to ourselves and others, living in a fantasy world of unrealistic expectations. Or the blue pill, accepting responsibility and changing your life style to begin the long road of fixing things.

As for me. Well I’m going to go back to baking more cookies. After all it’s what I do best, apart from reminding you of all the important things in life, like each other, and that I truly believe in you. Still not sure about things? Well, for right now, take a cookie, I promise, in a little while you’ll feel “right as rain”!
