Spiraling Leaves
Have you ever noticed that (many) spirals in nature, spiral out from left to right. I do!
Have you noticed that this is also true in the universe! I notice this too. I am fascinated by spirals and …
I am left-handed! Ambidextrous (either hand) in some cases, but mostly left-handed.
And a little sensitive about the fact that I live in a world where more than 90% of the population is right-handed and sees things from that reference point.
~
I created the craft of Loopweaving (a method of using yarn where you spiral out to create containers of all sizes).
I didn’t think about the fact that I Loopweave in a left handed way. My first attempts at showing other people how to loopweave was, let’s just say it did not go well.
Everything I did was reversed from how right-handed people would do the same things. I did try for awhile to teach other people this new craft but sadly it came to naught.
~
The video of my writing/drawing from a previous post is a mirror image. And because most everyone thinks a person is right handed it was assumed I was writing backwards.
I can in fact write backwards, although not as quickly as the regular way. However I am in very good company (re: historical individuals). Rome erected a sculpture of lefty Leonardo Da Vinci waving his left hand to welcome guests to the city!
Left-hander Elias Howe (no relation to me), who invented the sewing machine; put the needle on the left side of the machine where it remains today!
Lefty musician Jimi Hendrix taught himself how to play the guitar by flipping the right-handed guitar upside down rather than trying to re-string it left-handed.
So I’m comfortable being in good (historical) company: A few more lefties you may have heard of are:
Albert Einstein, Julius Caesar, Aristotle, Neil Armstrong, Henry Ford, Marie Curie, Joan of Arc, Helen Keller, Henri de Toulouse Lautrec, Peter Paul Rubens, Lewis Carrol, Uhland Ludwig, Morgan Freeman, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Charlie Chaplin, Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, Chewbacca the Wookie, Celine Dion, Bob Geldof, Annie Lennox, Babe Ruth, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, Barack Obama, Nicole d’Oresme, Dr. Albert Schweitzer, Uri Geller, Euell Gibbons, Jean Plantureux, Peter Benchley, Viktoria Stefanov, H.G. Wells, Bruce Jenner, Larry Bird, Randy Johnson (southpaw – big time lol) I saw him pitch, wow!
This is but a handful! Notice there are mathematicians, philosophers, inventors, athletes, writers, heroes, leaders, astronauts, actors/actresses, musicians and so on. Interesting group, huh? My final words on this subject … Vive la différence!
And yes I do love spirals!
Thank you for visiting me today, have a most excellent weekend!
~ Penny
Penny! It was very exciting for me to visit your website. i am right-handed but my daughter is left-handed. I sometimes feel in awe of her because of what she sees and how she sees it. She is absolutely fascinated with spirals and draws them frequently. She can write upside down, backwards and sideways.
Hi Chris, encourage her in everything. She has a sensitive soul and will need that encouragement. She will view people and life from a different perspective. She is special and unique and sounds like she is very lucky to have you for a parent! 🙂
No leftie here but am wishing suddenly that I was in such great company. I was talking to a friend yesterday about the fact that I often find myself reading a magazine from back to front. Can you analyze that for me Penny? What does that say about me or do I want to know (lol)?
Happy to. I do that too. Actually when in business I did that with the monthly financials (drove my accountant crazy “how can you do that, it can’t make sense? – it did though, it was easier to figure out bottom line stuff for analyzing”) Truth is it makes perfect sense if you think about it, your working your back towards the beginning – so you end at the beginning! Voila! A good thing, huh LuAnn! 🙂
I’m going to say a very good thing. 🙂
Always! 🙂
Snail shells come to mind as spirals and also the way search patterns are coordinated in certain circumstances. You are also in good company with Kermit the Frog and Ned Flanders also being left handers. I thing you should wear a badger to show off your higher status than us plebian right handers.
A badge, now that’s a scary thought. I see the future of it – “Dr Seuss – Stars upon thars”, Yikes!
Mesmerizing… mmhmm, long live the difference!
I had a hunch you would like spirals Tina! Thanks, Penny 🙂
Lovely penny ~ can’t get over your loop weaving talents!! These are wonderful creations… and you really do write backwards — it is amazing! Hubby is a lefty but don’t think he can do either ~ Much Love sweet dear friend ~ Keep creating – you do magic ! xo R
Thanks Robyn so very much. Congratulate him on my behalf. He’s left-handed and has a wonderful life partner, too cool! Sleep well my dear friend, Penny xox
Spirals are such fascinating loopers.
I’m so glad to hear someone has an interest in our universe.
You have no idea, well maybe you do, now that I give it some thought!
Exactly.
Spirals derive from our ancestors of our past, present, and future.
Yes, that is understandable!
🙂
I have a few friends who are left-handed, and I always think left-handed people are talented.
I think there may be a stronger connection “brain-wise” although there are also many really talented right-handed people. Of course you know me so I have researched this topic and the percentage is pretty high re: left-handers that fall into that category of creative talent. 🙂
I’m a southpaw, too! 🙂 Strangely, neither of my parents, nor any of my siblings are left-handed. Sometimes I think that I’m the milkman’s baby. 😉
I couldn’t teach either of my children how to tie their shoes because they’re right-handed and I was teaching them backwards!
Hi Lefty! Yeah I gotcha’ same here. Aren’t we special though? 🙂
Outside my back door, I have a wonderful large stone copy of a nautilus fossil hung on the wall. What I find so amazing about the nautilus is that its dimensions fit exactly with “divine proportions”. I believe that Mozart instinctively constructed music using divine proportions, as did Leonardo da Vinci with his art. I wonder if they were left-handed, too.
You might find this interesting to read http://www.keplersdiscovery.com/DivineProportion.html
Yes Sarah, they both were left handed! Thank’s I will check the link out! 🙂
barb’s master award post sent me here, and i already see why she respects you and your writing so much! congratulations! i look forward to reading more of your posts!
lisa/z
Thank you Lisa, Barb is wonderful isn’t she? I appreciate your visit and look forward to stopping by your place! again my thanks, Penny 🙂
My dear Penny: First, I love the spirals! Second: You are the first site/person to have “The Masters Award” bestowed upon them! I could not think of a better site to receive this new award! My congratulations to you for mastering the art of blogging! Here is a link to my post:

My best to you and hugs too!
Hi Barbara, I’ve alread responded at your site I’d only like to say once again how very moved I am. And it is really hard to find the right words (all evidence to the contrary lol) to thank you for this wonderful wonderful gift! Thank you once again, Penny
Oh yes, spirals are fascinating. I remember as a child when I saw a photo of a whirlpool in the ocean. It frightened me, but the fascination had begun. And what lay at the hearts of thes spirals, like at the center of galaxies… black holes. *smiles*
Yes, I agree completely Yordie, Had a similar experience. I guess us Idahoians “see” things in a special way! Cool! hugs xx
I love looking at spirals.
I have nothing against left handed people. lol But as a teacher…when teaching cursive handwriting….I always thought…oh please please…no left handers in my class.
Now with everything being done on computers etc….I don’t even think they teach handwriting anymore.
It is sad, because a persons signature is an extension of their personality. My mom taught me to write and since I was drawing so young, it didn’t ever pose a problem for me in school. My writing (penmanship) style changes according to my mood. I had a friend, a psychologist who told me that was unusual. 3 different styles, she asked me to show her so I did. One slants forward (decision making, serious). Straight up and down, reflective jotting notes, and backward slant, upset, not happy. Just something I do. Don’t think about it really too much! I think they still teach handwriting (cursive) but not much time is spent on it, Sadly Meme!
I didn’t realise Chewie was left handed. I know he was killed in the expanded universe by having a moon belt him 😉
I digress though. Four US Presidents who were lefties. That is extraordinary. Also the fact that Brad Pitt and Angelina Stick are both left handed. I’m more cack-handed. Predominately right, but use my left for a lot.
Einstein also had Asperger’s Syndrome.
I knew you’d catch that Alastair! 🙂 There were 4 lefty presidents and I know them all (figuratively speaking). Yes on some levels re: Brad and Angelina it would explain their humanitarian efforts (and tons of money and time given to those in need). they use their celebrity status in a good way! I am not surprised you use both hands, it’s that creative thing I think! 🙂 Penny
You know me too well 😉 Walking carpets and all that hehe
Oh you saying about presidents, the Dalai Lama came over here recently, so I thought I would see if he was coming anywhere near here, and unfortunately he may as well have been going to the North Pole the distance he was. But I digress … maybe people who are ambidextrous do have more talent as they have opened up another part of their brain.
[Goofball time] I’d give my right arm to be ambidextrous
Goofball! 🙂
Yup 😀
AnElephant has a corrie-fisted (left-handed) daughter, so southpaws are very special to his heart. And he thinks that they do often seem to be disproportionately talented, beautiful and just all-round delightful.
Not that he is biased, of course.
Your daughter sounds wonderful. I’m guessing she is a very special, unique and much loved woman! And I’m also betting she knows it! Thank you my friend! Penny 🙂
My dear Penny, I heard you the first time.
Hugs
🙂

…and I thought it was my invention [loopweaving]!!! Imagine that [something to do with kindred spirits huh?!] However, yours looks perfect! 🙂
Loops, spirals and circles are my fav subject to draw and – strangely enough- from right to left! I think I was originally a leftie but no one noticed so I ended up using the right. However I can use both now and in many cases my left is far better!
“Vive la différence” indeed!
Thanks Marina, yes isn’t it fascinating, kindred spirits and “great minds” lol! Excellent, we are more alike than ever, pleasant thoughts indeed my friend! 🙂
My sister and I are both lefties, although I have evolved into ambidexterity. (Is that a word?) I think ambidextrous people have a unique outlook.
Yay! Good on you, more left-handed friends, Ambidexterity? I love it! And if it isn’t a word it should be! I of course would have to agree with you regarding our unique outlook. I’ve been asked if I speak foreign languages (as in conversing with people from other countries) My answer (you’ll get this) is “I am a foreign language”! that I think sums us leftys up! Penny 🙂
I absolutely love your images , but this is a post that deserves
attention to special conditions , precisely because of the fact , to which unambiguously indicate a historical fact. substitution treatment of this topic you today capture my attention. So I decided to nominate you for a special award today during the day I’ll ga design, design. during evenings send you,Let adorns your virtual cabinets, and let you always remind me, because I ‘m in that category, thank you for this wonderful post. I wish you all the best , your left-handed stefan
Stefan, you are left-handed? But of course you are. All the artistry and beautiful words you write in your posts! that explains much! Thank you my left-handed very special friend for sharing this information with me. Thank you, and the best to you also Stefan! Penny 🙂
I absolutely love your spiral images; beautiful choices. As for lefties, I’m a rightie, but when my right arm was disabled for a while, I learned to use the left. Even now, years later, everything else has gone back to right, but I still “mouse” with my left. Strange.
That is interesting Jen, I mouse with my right. We (humans) are a mystery aren’t we? But delightfully so I think! Thanks, spirals are fascinating, especially in nature! Hope your weekend is shaping up nicely for you. Penny 🙂
i have a brother lefty and he seems to manage all with ease. My youngest daughter is also a leftie, her father tried to make her a righty even went to the school and tried to force the teachers to make her right handed (jerk- he IS an ex) we fought battle royal at homework time when he would bring her to tears with his insistence. but she is a lefty and I think it is beautiful!
I believe lefties are god’s extra special people!
Thanks Len, funny how people have a problem with things that? I’m glad she got to be the lefty she was supposed to be after all! 🙂
me too 🙂
Two of my brothers are lefties. Well one was a lefty. The other is ambidextrous & like you mostly lefty. I enjoy watching lefties write & draw.
I was a left kinda’ when I broke a finger on my right hand last year 😉
xx 🙂 🙂 xx
Yes but did you try writing with your left hand Rosy? 🙂
